Google and Gmail phone verification with a virtual number

Updated 2026-11-04 · SMSFlash guides

How Google phone verification works, when a virtual number helps, what to do if Google says the number cannot be used, and how to keep the account recoverable.

When Google asks for a phone number

Google may ask for phone verification when you create a Gmail or YouTube account, sign in from a new place, or set up some Google Cloud or Workspace products. You can often skip it, but not always. A Google virtual number gives you a real number to receive that one code without using your personal SIM, for example for a separate work profile, a test account for QA, or a project account.

How to verify

"This phone number cannot be used for verification"

Google refuses numbers it has seen used too often, and sometimes refuses all numbers from one network for a while. This is not something any provider can switch off. If you see the message:

Make the account recoverable

Google can ask for a phone code again months later. Right after sign-up:

For an account you plan to keep for years, your own SIM or a long rental is the safer choice.

Frequently asked questions

Can I create a Gmail account without my own phone number?

Yes. You can use a virtual number to receive Google’s verification code. Google may still refuse some numbers; if so, cancel for a refund and try another country.

Does Google accept numbers from every country?

Google accepts many countries, but acceptance changes over time. The app shows which countries have Google numbers in stock right now.

Will a virtual number work for YouTube too?

YouTube uses your Google account, so the same Google service number works for YouTube phone verification.
