Why your phone number is a privacy risk, when a temporary virtual number protects you, and when you should use your own SIM instead.
Your phone number is an identifier
Your number follows you for years. It is linked to your name by your carrier, used to log in to banks and email, and often leaked in data breaches. Anyone who has it can search for you on messaging apps, send you scam texts, or try a SIM-swap attack. The fewer places it is stored, the smaller your risk.
When a virtual number makes sense
- Sign-ups you do not fully trust: a new shop, forum, a free trial or a one-off contest.
- Dating and marketplaces: keep your real number private until you trust the other person, for example on Tinder or classifieds.
- Separate identities: a work or brand profile on Instagram or Facebook that you do not want tied to your private SIM.
- Travel: receive a code with a local number without buying a SIM abroad.
- Testing: developers checking their own SMS flows.
When NOT to use one
A one-time number is temporary. After about 20 minutes it is gone, and later it can be issued to someone else. Do not use it as the only recovery method for anything you must keep long term:
- banking, payment and crypto exchange accounts;
- your main email account;
- government and health services.
For those, use your own SIM plus an authenticator app. If you need a second number long term, a rented number is better than a one-time activation.
How SMSFlash handles your data
You sign up with only an email address. Payments are in USDT, so no card details are stored. Codes are shown only in your own account. Turn on a strong password and use "Log out all other devices" in Profile if you ever suspect someone else used your account; you can see recent logins there too.
Extra tips
- After registering, add a recovery email and an authenticator app to the new account.
- Hide your phone number in the app’s privacy settings.
- Never share a received code with anyone; legitimate services will never ask for it.

Frequently asked questions
Is it legal to use a virtual number?
Using a virtual number to protect your privacy is legal in most places. What matters is how you use it: always follow the rules of the service and the law, and never use numbers for fraud or spam.
Can anyone see the codes I receive?
Codes are shown only inside your SMSFlash account. Keep your password and API key private.
Can a virtual number be traced back to me?
The number is not registered in your name, but services may still see other data such as your IP address and device. A virtual number reduces exposure of your real number; it is not full anonymity.
